Painting and printmaking
Five pages for a painter and printmaker in Brighton: a gallery where every piece carries its title, size, medium, framing and price, prints in editions of 25, a commissions page that runs from room photograph to finished canvas in four steps, a first-person studio page, and an inquiry form that asks which piece or which wall. The design, the writing and the images all came from the brief below.

The work first: one large painting, then a tight row of recent pieces. One short line on who makes the work and where. The open-studio date and the fact that commissions are taken. End with a clear route to the enquiry form.

The gallery, and the page that carries the most photographs on the whole site by a wide margin: paintings and prints in two groups, each piece with its title, size, medium and price or 'sold'. Images carry this page; a line of context per group at most. This page must never be short of photographs — if images are limited anywhere on the site, it is the other pages that go without, not this one.

How a commission works, in plain steps: a conversation about the subject, size and where it will hang; a sketch and a price agreed in writing; a deposit; the painting, six to ten weeks; collection or courier. Prices from £600, stated plainly. What is not offered: portraits of people, and rush jobs. One or two photographs of finished commissions.

Who the painter is and how the work gets made, written in first person and short: the studio, the materials, the coast and the downs the work keeps returning to, the monthly open studio. One photograph of the studio and one of the painter at work, unposed. No exhibition list, no awards.

The enquiry form: name, email, which piece or whether it is a commission, and a message. State that enquiries are answered within three working days, that the open studio is the first Saturday of the month 11 to 4, and that visits on other days are by appointment. The address as text, with a line on finding the studio in North Laine.
What comes out of a build: pages planned for the business, a design of its own, the words written and the forms wired.
