Cutler Cycles: a bike shop website, built from one brief.

Four pages for a two-mechanic bike shop and repair workshop in Sheffield: a workshop menu running from a £30 safety check through a £75 full service to a £60 wheel build, turnaround tied to an 11am drop-off, six questions answered including the three jobs the bench refuses, the parts kept on the shelves, and the two mechanics with what each of them is best at. The design, the copy and the photographs were all produced from the brief below, then published to the web.

What the builder was given.

You start with a sentence and the chat asks you a few questions. Your answers become a brief like this one, and everything below was produced from it.

Purpose
Website for a bike shop and repair workshop in Sheffield: what the workshop charges, what the shop stocks, and how to book a bike in
Audience
People in south Sheffield with a bike that needs fixing, commuters who ride all year, and anyone buying a first proper bike. A good number have been quoted a silly price somewhere else and are checking what things should cost.
Tone
Dry and deadpan. Prices stated, no jargon, and happy to say when a repair is not worth the money.

What was asked for, and what came back.

Asked for
Lead with the workshop, because that is what people come for, and put the four prices that matter most on this page. Then the hours, then where the shop is. Say in one line what the shop stocks and that none of it sells online. Photographs of the bench and the shopfront. One route to booking a bike in.

Asked for
The full price list as an actual list, each job with what it includes: puncture, brake adjustment, gear set-up, cable sets, safety check, full service, wheel build, wheel true, bottom bracket, headset, hydraulic bleed. Turnaround times stated honestly, same day for small jobs in before 11, two to three days in summer for a full service. What happens when they open a bike up and find something worse. What they will not take on: e-bike batteries and motors, carbon frame repairs, and anything where the parts cost more than the bike is worth.

Asked for
What is actually in the shop: commuter and gravel bikes from two or three brands, kids' bikes, second-hand bikes when they have them, and the parts worth keeping on the shelf, tyres, tubes, chains, lights, locks, mudguards. Say that stock moves and to ring before making a trip across town. Then the two mechanics, in first person, with what each of them is good at and how long they have been doing it. One photograph of the shop floor and one of each mechanic at work.

Asked for
The enquiry form to book a bike in: name, phone number, what the bike is, and what it is doing wrong, with a note that a photograph helps for anything bent or broken. Say that they reply the same working day and that dropping the bike in is always faster than describing it. The address as text with a line on parking on the road and the nearest tram stop, the phone number, and the hours.
